What a treat, I was part of the Victoria Jazz Society when we brought Jeith in to perform solo, a quick venue change was required because of a labor dispute, We were able to secure St Andrew's Cathedral. When Keith arrived he commented on the lack of a rug. I had an old rug of my Grandmothers in my bedroom so we hauled it back and slid it under the piano.

It doesn't matter how many times you listen to the album, it never gets boring. And you can also listen to just one instrument at a time and its fantastic. But the record company should reissue a good vinyl copy with booklet notes. Some dodgy copies around over the years.

I want to learn jazz but I’m also a mom of a toddler and work full time outside music. My dream is to build a repertoire of jazz standards and be able to adapt pop songs to jazz/bossa nova/salsa. Anyone have any thoughts of a realistic practice goal. I’m about a level 6/7 in royal conservatory terms, play pop music by easily by ear, but only had a few jazz lessons.

I remember his Strayhorn album being seen as his comeback (just like how State of the Tenor and One Night with Blue Note were his ‘80s comeback). But the critical response to the two subsequent “songbook” albums was more muted and mixed. It’s nice that, with the passage of time, Joe -- and this album -- gets his due.

Playing the cycle, up and down, (inverting 5ths and 4ths) in one octave, is a great (the best?) ear and finger warm-up for improvisors and students seeking to develop their ears.

Great post, and you once again alerted me to a fabulous album I had overlooked. I love your channel and a paid subscription is likely unavoidable soon. My playing is improving with every session I do with your free videos. THANK YOU. But, I have to disagree on the album art rating for this one. OMG this is a hot mess. It looks like a paper tray-liner at a Taco Bell, advertising Extreme Burrito Combos. Every trend of early computer layout is here - small caps fonts that aren't real small caps fonts (the capitals are just enlarged versions of the lower case characters, so they're fatter than the lower case letter, which makes them too prominent); those splashed, deconstructed graphics; the color grading on the main photo (that "extreme" thing again), and just because we can, why not vignette another gritty black and white photo on top? I'm pretty sure the art director is looking back with a teensy bit of regret - most of us who created these kinds of things are! But… this is an album so good you could have packaged it in a Glad Bag, and it'd still be a masterpiece.

I’m not sure of the context but you’re comparing kind of blue record to JH with Herbie, McBride, and Dejohnette (those are the best cuts at least). How is this comparable? KOB is a minimalist album that is a masterpiece and double rainbow is like literally the whole history of jazz up to that point coming out of all those cats. But yeah I’ve definitely listened to double rainbow way more than KoB. Great content y’all. Love it. Thank you so much

I owe the You'll Hear It folks an apology. I checked out Bill Charlap over the past couple of days at the Rochester International Jazz festival, and thought he was absolutely on fire (solo, and trio). The live performances were much more intense than what I have seen of his work on youtube, as highly skilled as that is. I thought to myself "I wonder why Open Studio never talks about this guy--he's great!" And here I am.

sorry to add yet another thought in the interminable thread about the obviously only half-serious scoring system. but just to say: given the way you guys are understanding the final category, it's really not "is it better than KOB?". it is "KOB is a 9; what is this?". would be so simple to relabel it that way, avoid having to re-explain what you actually mean Every. Single. Time. ;> (besides aiding clarity, this would make it perfectly sensible that the score KOB gets in this category is 9 rather than undefined or 0 or something.)

Happy practice is a thing. And I would say those words and term it as such if they were indoctrinated as such. I like practicing especially because I’m 25 and believe I can make some really nice jazz music for my generation so I have to find new creative ways to practice

Thank you for this and for giving him the respect and study he deserves! He was my teacher, mentor and dear friend of my fathers. His music and genius was a reflection of his spirit and heart. You said. it. How he lived, how he thought, how he spoke, how he walked, all a reflection of his music, and his music - a reflection of his being. His being was rich melody & harmony and music of the highest order. When I would point out certain phrases he would play and say "Uncle Jamal, that was absolute PERFECTION" he would always say "Only God is perfection." When I asked about musical specifics, through analogies we would quickly somehow get onto the subject of fine food. But whenever I asked what he was up to musically, he would say "Oh just trying to figure out the relationship between these black & white keys..." His presence was art. His aura was prayer. His wisdom was 1000 libraries. He drove hrs to come and see my first show at the Blue Note NYC, he always kept his word, and always helped younger musicians! (Many don't know that both So What and Impressions, were derived from a phrase Ahmad played in his '55 recording of Pavanne.) Man... words cannot express the true humility, the refined character, tasteful and elevated man and divinely appointed musician that Uncle Jamal was and is. Bless you for your beautifully written words about him. He was indeed simultaneously the hippest and deepest musician and jazz master we'll ever know as well as a sincere family man, incredible mentor, mystic, philosopher, philanthropist, teacher, scholar, academic, intellectual, artist, storyteller, entrepreneur, innovator, and so much more. I miss him indescribably, there will never be another AJ, on the piano, he made the keys sound like polished crystal, ice cubes, made of diamond, his harmony told stories in technicolor, his melodies were poetry and conversation, his phrasing was a teaching in aesthetic beauty, his composition was inner experience manifest in form, and his music was the sound track to universal beauty and the elevator to upstairs. And although many have tried, no one has been able to acquire these elements his sound or come close to expressing the subtlety and intricacy of his musicality and mastery. I am of course bias, but for these reasons, for me he is truly the greatest American Classical pianist and musician of all time! May you be soaring close & closer to the One uncle Jamal - Zayn

Great way to put it. I was (still am) a guitar player before I started the piano and the balance between the actual practice while learning songs and how it's actually used in context is crucial.
